Estimate vs quote vs invoice
These three get used interchangeably, but they commit you to different things:
- •Estimate: your best, good-faith guess at what the work will cost. It is not a fixed price, so the final bill can differ, but it should be reasonable.
- •Quote: a fixed price for a defined scope. In the UK, once the customer accepts a quote it is a binding agreement, written or not, and you cannot charge more except for agreed extra work or an obvious mistake.
- •Invoice: the demand for payment sent after, or as, the work is done. An accepted estimate or quote becomes the invoice.
Say which one you are giving. If you want room to adjust, label it an estimate and note the final invoice reflects actual work; if the customer needs price certainty, give a quote and hold to it.
