For solo and small-firm lawyers

Invoicing built for solo and small-firm attorneys

Hourly billing with detailed time entries, flat-fee matters, and retainer replenishment, all on professional, audit-ready invoices. Recipients can add a matter number, fix the client entity, and approve from one private link.

What general invoicing tools miss for lawyers

Legal billing has its own conventions: detailed time entries with task codes, matter numbers, trust accounting, and a client paying directly versus a corporate client paying through AP. Generic tools collapse all of this into a flat list and lose the structure clients expect.

!

Detailed time entries are non-negotiable

Corporate clients require itemized time entries with date, task code, narrative, and hours. "Legal services, 5 hours" gets rejected and re-sent every time.

!

Matter numbers and engagement letters

Each invoice typically references a matter number. Without per-invoice metadata fields, the matter number ends up in a free-text field that AP cannot reliably parse.

!

Retainers and trust accounting are separate

Funds in trust are not yet earned. Most generic invoicing tools do not distinguish, which creates audit headaches.

!

Confidential matter descriptions need control

You may need to share invoice details with the client but not with anyone the client shares the invoice with. Coarse access controls are not enough; field-level discretion matters.

What lawyers use JupiterInvoice for

Important note: not a full practice management tool

JupiterInvoice is a focused invoicing tool, not a legal practice management suite. We do not handle:

  • IOLTA / trust accounting (use Clio, MyCase, or LeanLaw for this).
  • Conflict checks or client intake.
  • Court calendaring.

JupiterInvoice is a strong fit for a solo practitioner who tracks time elsewhere (a spreadsheet, a stopwatch, Toggl) and wants a clean, professional invoice with great recipient handling. If you need a full practice management stack, use one of the legal-specific tools above.

Lawyer FAQ

Is JupiterInvoice a substitute for Clio or MyCase?
No. Clio and MyCase are full legal practice management platforms with trust accounting, client intake, conflict checks, and court calendaring. JupiterInvoice is a focused invoicing tool. If your practice is small enough to manage matters in a spreadsheet, JupiterInvoice can replace the invoicing piece. If you need full practice management, stay with the legal-specific tools.
Can I send detailed itemized time entries on a legal invoice?
Yes. Each line item supports a date, an hours quantity, an hourly rate, and a free-text description for the task narrative. A typical legal invoice has dozens of entries; the web view and the PDF both render them cleanly.
How do I include a matter number on the invoice?
Use the invoice's reference / PO number field for the matter number, or add it to a line description. Some firms use both: the invoice number is sequential per the firm, and the matter number is a separate field that the client's AP system uses.
Does JupiterInvoice handle trust accounting (IOLTA)?
No. Trust accounting requires segregated handling and reconciliation that we do not provide. Use a legal-specific tool for this. JupiterInvoice can still be useful alongside trust accounting software for billing the earned portion of fees.
How do I bill a flat-fee matter?
Add a single line item with the flat fee, the matter described, and a quantity of 1. If you take a deposit at engagement and bill the balance at completion, send two invoices: one for the deposit, one for the balance, both referencing the matter number.
Can my client's general counsel approve the invoice on the link?
Yes. The recipient can mark the invoice approved on the link without an account. The approval is timestamped and locks the version. If the GC wants to forward the invoice to AP after approval, the forward action is also on the link.
Is the invoice link confidential?
The invoice URL contains a long random token (32 characters of unguessable entropy) that acts as the access credential. Anyone with the link can view the invoice; anyone without it cannot. If you need the link to be revoked, regenerate the token from the dashboard. For privileged client communications, do not share the link beyond the intended recipients.
Is JupiterInvoice free?
Yes. The full product is free for unlimited invoices. A small "Powered by JupiterInvoice" footer renders on each invoice. The paid plan ($12 / month) removes the footer if you want a fully unbranded invoice for premium clients.
