What every receipt must include

A receipt is proof that a payment was made. To settle a later dispute on its own, it needs all of these:

  • Who paid and who received the money, both named in full.
  • What the payment was for, itemized when it covers more than one thing, or the period covered in the case of rent.
  • The date the money was received and the amount.
  • How it was paid: cash, bank transfer, card, check. This matters most for cash, where neither side has a bank record.
  • The balance still owed, even when it is zero, plus a receipt number so you can find it later.

Each template below is a filled-in worked example carrying all of these, so you can see how a complete receipt reads before you write your own. New to the difference? Invoice vs receipt covers when each document applies.

Real worked examples

Each template is a finished example receipt with a payer, an amount, a payment method, and a balance, not a blank form. See how a complete receipt reads, then make it yours.

A paid invoice is a receipt

If you billed for the work first, you do not need a template: mark the invoice paid in JupiterInvoice and the same document becomes the receipt, stamped and dated.
