Construction invoice template FAQ

What should a construction invoice include?
A construction invoice should list the client and project, an invoice number and issue date, and itemized line items split into labor and materials so the client can see what they are paying for. Include the payment terms, any deposit or retainage already applied, and your business and tax details. On progress-billed jobs, reference the schedule of values and the percentage complete.
How do progress billing and retainage work on a construction invoice?
Progress billing invoices a percentage of the contract as each stage is completed, rather than the whole job at the end. Retainage is a percentage, often 5 to 10 percent, that the client holds back from each payment until the project is finished and signed off. Show both clearly so the amount due reconciles against the contract.

What is the difference between the PDF, Excel, and Word versions?

Whose details are in the template?
The sender block is left as placeholders ("Your business name") because that is the part you personalize. The line items, amounts, and terms are a realistic example for construction work, meant to be replaced with your own.
Can I edit the line items and amounts?
Yes. The example content is a starting point. In the Excel file you edit the cells directly; in the live version you change every field on the invoice. Replace the sample line items with your own work.
How is the live version better than a downloaded file?
